He doesn't know what he wants, and if the other person follows, then they will be a mess together. In my own interpretation, I believe that Joji is lost and is telling the person that if they follow him, they will become just as lost as him. Lyrically, Joji addresses the "love interest" of the song by telling him or her not to follow him, or else he/she will end up in his arms. To describe such build-up in another way, the buzzing starts quietly and there is a crescendo that helps the sound end on a louder pitch. However, towards the end of this section there is a build-up of sorts with the reverberation that create an anticipation for the chorus. As a classically-trained musician, I feel the same patterns of classical music are present in this piece - much like Beethoven’s famous “Für Elise,” the form follows the same form and has a sort of prevailing melody that gets stuck in my head easily.Īs the pre-chorus begins, the musical elements (melody, texture, rhythm) remain the same.

I wouldn’t describe the song to be classical music in any way, though the similarities are apparent. The relaxingly slow tempo (perhaps it is adagio) coupled with his outpour of emotional lyrics makes for a song I want to share with others. I chose this song not because it is one of my favorite songs (though to be honest, it is), but because it resonates so deeply with me. His musical style is a blend of electronic and R&B styles, with melancholic and meaningful lyrics. Though recent in his singing career, his 2018 debut studio album Ballads 1, from which the chosen song is from, reached number one on Billboard‘s top R&B and hip-hop chart - making Joji the first Asian American to do such a feat. George Miller, better known by his stage name “Joji,” is a former YouTube-personality turned singer.
